Articles

“I glanced over it,” said he. “Honestly, I cannot congratulate you upon it.”

Articles which currently appear here were written by members of the Crew and previously appeared in either The Log (an annual journal which was published from 2007 – 2010) or its predecessor Chronicler. A decision was recently taken that in future all scholarly articles published by the Society will instead appear on this website. To this end, a new page will be created and will replace this Articles page. The new page will include original articles by crewmates, articles sourced from elsewhere (with relevant permission obtained) and selected material from our archives. We hope to have more to say about all this very soon.

Codes & Penguins.

The four letter/number codes referred to in articles on this website are those devised by American Sherlockian Jay Finley Christ (pronounced like ‘wrist’). Please click on our Stories page for further details including a complete list of these codes alongside the full story titles. For the sake of uniformity and convenience, page references in articles published on this website and in our publications are taken from the Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes (same edition as Doubleday). This is the edition which the Crew uses for group study purposes. We often use these page references in conjunction with the use of the equivalent Christ code. An example of this is the quotation which appears on this website’s Home page: “I went down to the Albert Dock yesterday at 6 p.m; and boardered the S.S.May Day, belonging to the Liverpool, Dublin, and London Steam Packet Company.” This quote is taken from The Adventure of the Cardboard Box. The code for this story is CARD and the Penguin Complete page number is 897 so the abbreviation is therefore CARD 897.
