Stories

“Your cases have indeed been of the greatest interest to me,” I observed.

A  small selection of the stories is included here for your reading pleasure.  We’ll be adding to this at irregular intervals so that eventually all sixty stories will be readily accessible on our website.

THE CANON - STORY BY STORY TOGETHER WITH CODES, ORIGINAL PUBLICATION SOURCES & DATES.

The Sherlock Holmes Canon consists of  fifty six short stories and four long stories (the latter are sometimes referred to as novels or novellas) written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The full title of each story is shown here, followed by its equivalent Christ case code (shown in capitals). The four letter/number codes used in articles on this website and in our publications are those devised by American Sherlockian Jay Finley Christ (pronounced like ‘wrist’). The codes are widely used by scholars as abbreviations for the sixty stories which constitute the Sherlock Holmes canon. They can either appear in block capitals (as shown in the following list) or in the upper-lower-case format (e.g. Abbe, Blac, Engr, RedC, 3 Stu, and so on) which Christ used in His Irregular Guide to Sherlock Holmes (1947) where these codes first appeared. We would admit that not everyone approves of the use of these codes but many of us do find them rather convenient, for instance  when writing articles or referring quickly to individual stories in conversation. That said, we do try and encourage the use of the proper story titles as much as possible.

The majority of these stories were originally published in the UK in the Strand Magazine. The exceptions to this are the first two stories, both long ones - A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. We’ve also included the name and date of the publication in which each story first appeared in the UK.
